The 17th Annual Memorial Weekend

Presented by: Boy Scout Troop 71, Stratford, Connecticut

Sunday, September 4, 2011 was the date for the First Annual Labor Day Car Show presented by Boy Scout Troop 71 of Stratford, Connecticut.

Everything from early vintage cars and trucks to street rods and unique everyday drivers graced the parking area of the Knights of Columbus building in Milford, CT on Sunday, September 4th. The ample parking lot and great location fronting Rt.1 gave the show the extra exposure it needed to attract many spectators. The weather, although somewhat threatening skies in the morning, cleared up and became very sunny and quite humid. But  the heat and humidity didn't stop either the participants or the spectators from having a great time and enjoying themselves. "This was the first time we've ever tried to do something like this" said Assistant Scout Master Rich Kovach, speaking about the car show. "It took a lot of  planning and hard work but I think we accomplished what we set out to do". Over one hundred vehicles rolled through the check point before 12:00PM. The first 100 cars received a Dash-Plaque and Goodie Bag by the organizers of the show. People's choice and judge voting took place with over 20 trophies handed out to the winners in a vast array of categories. Disc Jockey Ed Butler played all the great old 60's, 70's and 80's hits while an abundance of hamburgers and hotdogs roasted in the background. There were numerous raffles that took place including a well received 50/50 raffle. Although this event was the first time the Boy Scout Troop and all its members attempted a fund raiser of this magnitude and type, everything was well thought out and professionally executed. The money that was raised,  according to Ray Allan, one of the Troop's members, will go directly for items such as tents, lanterns, sleeping bags and other equipment that is much needed for the Boy Scout Troop. Rich Kovach told us, "I'm very pleased. Everyone involved did a great job. Everything went very well here today. We'll definitely be back next year".
