The Engine 260 Antique Fire Apparatus Show & Muster was held on Saturday, September 10, 2011, at Eisenhower Park, Milford, Connecticut. The event started at 9:00 a.m., with an impressive parade of antique fire apparatus, vintage police vehicles and ambulances. The parade traveled from the Liberty Rock Shopping Plaza, 589 Bridgeport Avenue to Meadowside Road, through Milford center onto North Street, and ended at Eisenhower Park. The event attracts firefighters from Rhode Island, Vermont, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut; it is known to be one of the last shows of its kind in the country. It provided an opportunity for firefighters to demonstrate their competitive skills and allowed firefighter teams to battle for the first-place trophy in eight competitions. More than 25 muster teams competed to determine who was the best in the tug of war, the midnight alarm, the water barrel blast, the arena pumping contest and the bucket brigade. One of the crowd’s favorite events was the firefighters race to raise and climb a ladder to rescue a child mannequin from a tower. Children who wanted to participate in the festivities were made “firefighter for the day”. They were given a fireman’s helmet and shown how to safely handle a fire hose. An interactive fire prevention trailer was also on site. Firefighters taught children how to get out of a burning building and to stop, drop and roll. The proceeds from the show benefit Camp Happiness, a summer camp for special-needs children. Plenty of hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream, water and soda was sold, with those proceeds also going to the camp.
